What is in a face?

A face can reveal joy, sadness, hope, fear, grief, peace, or pain. It is often the doorway into another soul. Deep within every human heart is a longing that quietly whispers: “Please see me.”

Have you ever had the privilege of seeing a newborn baby just moments after entering the world? After making that difficult and exhausting journey through the birth canal, the baby immediately begins searching. Their tiny eyes move anxiously, hungrily, almost desperately, looking for one thing: A face.

It is one of the very first acts of human life. Find a face.

And when that baby locks eyes with someone, something beautiful happens. There is comfort. Connection. Safety. Security. Love. Understanding.

The longing to look into another face and truly be seen does not end in infancy. It continues throughout our entire lives. We all want to be seen. Really seen.

Maybe that is because God created us for connection. Perhaps joy begins the moment someone looks at us with love, compassion, and presence. What a gift God has given us through our faces. Your face was created to look into the soul of another person. Your eyes, your expressions, your attention, your smile, all of it can communicate value and love without saying a single word.

To be seen is often our first introduction to joy. There is something deeply healing about being noticed. Not overlooked. Not rushed past. Not stared through. But genuinely seen. The next time you speak with someone, look at them. Do not look around them. Do not look through them. Look at the face in front of you.

That person is carrying a story, a burden, a joy, or perhaps a silent pain. Your attention may be more meaningful than you realize. God has entrusted each of us with this beautiful responsibility. Faces come in all forms. Young or old. Smooth or wrinkled. Imperfect or worn from life’s struggles. It does not matter.

Every face reflects a person made in the image of God.

When you speak with another human being, love them enough to truly see them. Your face can become a gift from God to someone who desperately needs kindness, hope, or joy.
